Direct-to-Film (DTF) Transfer Information

Blue Moose Designs specializes in high-definition Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing for apparel and promotional products. Our DTF transfers are produced using a 9-color printer (C, M, Y, K, R, G, B, O, and White) to achieve unmatched color depth, vibrancy, and smooth gradients. This advanced system allows accurate reproduction of complex artwork, metallic tones, and subtle shading with a soft, durable finish.

How DTF Printing Works

The DTF process involves printing full-color artwork onto a coated film using pigment-based inks. The printed film is coated with a fine adhesive powder, cured, and heat-transferred to the garment. Once applied, the result is a vivid, flexible, and long-lasting print suitable for most fabric types.

Film Types Offered

  • Hot Peel Film (Standard): Our most popular film offering a smooth matte finish and excellent hand feel. Designed for efficient high-volume production and clean release.
  • Glitter Film: Embedded with reflective metallic flakes that provide sparkle and shimmer under light. Perfect for fashion and statement designs.
  • Holographic Film: Produces a rainbow-reflective, iridescent effect that changes with light and viewing angle.
  • Reflective Film: Contains micro-glass particles for high-visibility safety or nighttime applications.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Film: Photoluminescent material that charges under light and glows in low-light environments.
  • Rainbow Effect Film: Multi-layer prismatic finish with gradient reflection and vivid depth.

Artwork Preparation

  • For best results and full color accuracy, submit artwork in RGB color mode at 300 DPI. Our 9-color system (C, M, Y, K, R, G, B, O, White) is optimized for RGB source files.
  • Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, or SVG) are preferred for logos and sharp designs.
  • Raster files (PNG, TIFF, PSD) must include a transparent background and be sized to the final print dimensions.
  • Flatten all layers and convert text to outlines to avoid substitution errors.
  • Exact color matching cannot be guaranteed due to material reflectivity and monitor calibration differences.
  • Blue Moose Designs is not responsible for color or print variations caused by low-quality, compressed, or improperly formatted artwork.

Application Instructions

Standard Hot Peel Film
  • Pre-press garment for 10–12 seconds at 285°F (140°C) to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  • Apply transfer at firm pressure (7–9 or 60–70 psi) for 10–12 seconds at 285°F (140°C).
  • Peel Hot — remove film immediately while still warm.
  • Re-press with parchment or Teflon sheet for 10–12 seconds at 285°F (140°C) to seal and improve durability.
Specialty Films (Glitter, Holographic, Reflective, Glow, Rainbow)
  • Pre-press garment for 10–12 seconds at 320°F (160°C).
  • Apply transfer at firm pressure (7–9 or 60–70 psi) for 15–18 seconds at 320°F (160°C).
  • Peel “Dead Cold” — allow transfer to cool completely before removing film.
  • Re-press with parchment or Teflon sheet for 10–12 seconds at 320°F (160°C) to ensure full bonding and smooth finish.

Garment Compatibility

  • DTF transfers adhere to cotton, polyester, poly-blends, canvas, denim, fleece, and many performance fabrics.
  • Not recommended for heavily waterproof, silicone-coated, or sublimated garments without prior testing.
  • High-stretch fabrics may cause design distortion if overheated or pressed under low pressure.

Durability & Care

  • Properly applied DTF transfers are rated for 50+ wash cycles.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing to reduce friction and abrasion.
  • Machine wash cold or warm with mild detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
  • Tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Excessive heat can soften the adhesive and reduce life span.
  • Do not iron directly on the transfer. If pressing is necessary, use a protective barrier cloth.

Color & Finish Variation

DTF transfers are printed using advanced pigments and specialty films; therefore, slight shifts in hue or sheen may occur between materials, production runs, or lighting conditions. Metallic, holographic, glitter, and reflective finishes may display varying intensity depending on angle and light source. These characteristics are natural to the material and not considered defects.

Storage & Handling

  • Store unused transfers in a cool, dry, dark environment (60–75°F) away from humidity and direct sunlight.
  • Keep films flat — do not roll or crease. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of transfers.
  • Handle by edges to avoid contamination of the adhesive surface.

Quality Assurance

Each transfer is printed, cured, and inspected to ensure strong adhesion, color accuracy, and consistent finish. Blue Moose Designs guarantees our transfers when applied following the above conditions. Blue Moose Designs is not responsible for improper application, use of incompatible materials, or damage caused by deviation from the recommended press settings.
